2010 and 2011 Sustainability Challenges and Commitments

Sustainability is one of the pillars of Codelco’s management. The challenge is to be a highly responsible company and produce copper with the highest standards of quality, not only regarding the product and its usefulness and benefits for society, but in its entire production process.

Our sustainability management prioritizes the fundamental principles of our Value Statement, which in the first place grants work health and safety, not tolerating fatalities or the occurrence of serious accidents to people, as well as ensuring the efficient and sustainable use of resources, environmental and community management, and compliance with all applicable regulations.

• Improve safety indicators and continuing to be one of the industry’s best.
• Enforce for all Chileans who work or live in the neighborhood of Codelco’s projects and operations the constitutional right to live in a pollution-free environment, through the continuous improvement of our environmental performance.
• Foster the development of communities neighboring company operations.
• Develop projects in harmony with environmental and work safety regulations.
• Continue promoting new uses of copper.
• Develop and execute concurrent closure plans at those facilities that end their operation and have no future alternative use.
• Maintain permanent and timely communications allowing us to develop and strengthen trust amongst our stakeholders.
