The talk organized by the Chilean Society of Rock Mechanics brought students from the University of O'Higgins and professionals in the area closer to knowledge about the solutions implemented by the El Teniente Division in underground mining.

In partnership with the University of O'Higgins, the Chilean Society of Rock Mechanics and the Geobrugg company, a seminar on risk control in mining was held. The activity, which took place at the University of O'Higgins, brought together students and industry professionals, including an audience connected online.
On this occasion, Soledad Celis, head of the Fortification Unit of the Superintendency of Operational Geomechanics, and Alejandro Muñoz, head of Geomechanical Project Engineering, spoke at the event, showing the progress made in the fortification systems at El Teniente, highlighting the role of fortification in protection against the risk of rock bursts in environments with high seismic activity.
For Soledad Celis, sharing her knowledge with students is a fundamental responsibility. “I think it is essential that they can learn about field work and the challenges of mining, because only then can they understand the magnitude and importance of what we do in geomechanics. Inspiring and motivating them through our experience is key to their development and the future of the industry.”
Regarding the importance of sharing this work with students, Alejandro Muñoz commented that “for the Division, it is key to disseminate the work in Geomechanics and share knowledge that strengthens our collaboration with the academic sector. We show how the El Teniente Division has advanced in its studies and tests to optimize the support systems in our most challenging mines.”
Kimie Suzuki, president of the Chilean Society of Rock Mechanics, highlighted the value of shared experience: “The importance of this is that students can see the different perspectives and how these companies converse and apply their experiences in highly applied topics.”
Felipe Hidalgo, manager of Mining Resources and Development at El Teniente, highlighted the value of collaboration: “It is important to share with industry and academia what the Division does, enriching both educational institutions and industry. This generates synergies and encourages innovation.”
