Sebastián Ríos, MPG Lead Mechanic, Conventional Grinding Plant: “My intention was always to get into mining and this is where I want to be”

Coming from a mining family on both his father's and mother's sides, Sebastián Ríos' goal from an early age was to work at the El Teniente Division. “I did my internship here and it is a source of pride and satisfaction to be working at the Conventional Grinding Plant,” says the 29-year-old, who works as a lead mechanic at the MPG company. “It is very organized here and there is a lot of discipline in the teams. It is a pleasure to work here.”

What is your job about?

I have worked in different areas: mechanics, logistics, and now I am in cleaning, as the leader of a small group that we put together. Our job is to maintain the plant, the conventional milling, the cyclone batteries, all the components of the mills. Every day we clean with hoses, shovels, pikes, and we unclog the lines as well.

After that, the mechanical teams come in, with whom we have to constantly coordinate, in addition to the operators. With all of them, coordinating the functions on a daily basis is essential. We do the cleaning so that the equipment is in the right condition so that the other colleagues can proceed to work in the best way.

Do you remember how you came to El Teniente?

I arrived in 2016 to do my internship and it is a source of pride to be here, because it is a company for all Chileans, which produces a large amount of surpluses for the country. I think that anyone, especially young people, would like to come here. For me it was a great joy, because I learned a lot, I work in my trade, in my profession, in what I like. What I do day to day, I do it with a lot of motivation, responsibility and commitment, because my goal was to get here.

My father works here, 30 years in the Division, as an expert operator. And so do my grandparents, my family is a miner, on my mother's and father's side. My intention has always been to project myself here in the mining industry and this is where I belong, it is where I want to be.

And what do you like most about your job?

We work in groups, we share with many people, it is not something individual. We learn day by day from people, that helps us a lot to improve in every sense. And I am also motivated to improve day by day, to be better in the professional and personal sphere.

What do you feel El Teniente has brought to your life?

Security, stability. I can develop as a person, I am studying thanks to the company. I was able to have my car, my house, I have my family, I feel that in the time I have been here, it has given me a lot and my motivation is that, to keep improving.

What safety message would you like to give to your colleagues?

First of all, work calmly, with caution, always being aware of the risks to which we are exposed. Because the idea is to do the job well, because it is not the same to fulfill but to have an accident. We must also ensure that there are zero accidents. We have families and pets waiting for us at home.

What does it mean to you to work for Codelco and that all the work you do ultimately generates the surpluses that are delivered to all Chileans?

For me it is a pride and a privilege. Codelco is a very large company, which belongs to all Chileans and has a lot of prestige for what it produces. For anyone, being here has an additional value and that, for me, generates a lot of pride and a lot of value.
