Around 50 media representatives gathered in the VIP lounge of the sports venue to commemorate the date that marks the beginning of circulation of “La Aurora de Chile”, the first newspaper in the country.

With a breakfast organized by the Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Government of O'Higgins, and supported by Codelco División El Teniente, the National Press Day was celebrated in the VIP room of the El Teniente stadium. The ceremony commemorated February 13, 1812, the date on which “La Aurora de Chile”, the first newspaper in the country, began to circulate.
"We want to acknowledge the work done by the press and journalists, which is always complex in the regions, with scarce resources, but with great professionalism to comply with informational sovereignty even in the most remote places. There is an effort by the press teams, by the owners and supporters of the media that must be valued," said Carlos Carrasco, regional minister of Government, before about fifty representatives of the press of O'Higgins.
Pablo Silva, Regional Governor, stated that “we must be grateful for the work carried out by the press to strengthen the right to information and contribute to society through truthfulness and the common good, especially in difficult times such as those that the country and the region have recently experienced due to forest fires.”
For Germán Sandoval, Sustainability and External Affairs Manager at El Teniente, “the work done by the press is essential to achieve the transparency required by a company like Codelco , which is owed to all Chileans. We are interested in the local and regional press having a relevant space and that, from that role, they help us to make our management greater.”
“In this commemoration, as a College of Journalists we want to highlight the workers who make it possible for the community to exercise its right to information, in a truthful and timely manner. In instances like these we can reflect on the role that the press plays in society, to perform it ethically and to work independently, with freedom of expression, as a basic condition for democracy and the informed participation of citizens,” added Nadia Flores, leader of the union organization.
