In search of professional development, opportunities, challenges and growth, Mauricio Montenegro set himself the goal of one day starting work at Codelco División El Teniente. “I finally made it. I started on June 1, 2020 and I have been here for three years now,” he says. “I had applied many times and right in the middle of the pandemic, my opportunity came.”

What is your job about?
My job is to ensure the proper functioning of the equipment and to maximize water recovery as much as possible. In this area we receive the tailings from the plants and by adding flocculants (elements that bind the solids and separate them from the water) in the thickeners, we recover the water so that it is a sustainable operation, reducing the consumption of fresh water and recirculating the water that is used.
My work itself is in the field and also in the control room, we organize the tasks with the expert operator of the area, we coordinate the work with the Conventional Grinding, SAG Grinding and also the Waste Treatment plants.
On site, we check the equipment to ensure it is working correctly: thickeners, flocculant pumps, pump rooms, load distribution boxes, among others.
How did you get to the Division?
I was a shift manager at the Andina Division, in a partner company, and I wanted to project myself more professionally and in my family life. When they called me that I had been hired, I was very excited. I told everyone and they were happy and proud.
What do you like most about your job?
The challenges we constantly face in water recovery, how dynamic the day-to-day is, because we are a multi-variable plant where we have to be attentive to everything: solids, pH, load decreases, so we have to be constantly thinking about how to improve the processes.
What do you feel El Teniente has brought to your life?
Professional development, because I was able to advance from my position and there is also the issue of family conciliation, which for me is the most important thing. I really like being here because the work environment is very pleasant, I am very happy and I see myself here in El Teniente. I want to bring my family and settle in Rancagua.
Does it mean anything to you to work for a company like Codelco, which delivers its surpluses to all Chileans?
Yes, and it is a source of pride to contribute to the country with the work we do in this division.
