Guillermo Vásquez's first jobs in the El Teniente Division were as an electrical maintenance technician in a contracting company. “I studied industrial electronics and I would have been an electrician,” he recalls.

While working there, he applied to join Codelco, a process that he successfully completed and that took him to the mine, to production levels. And although today he continues working inside the hill, in the Diablo Regimiento mine, he carries out his tasks from Rancagua, in the Integrated Operations Center (CIO).
What is your job about?
I am the expert operator of the plant. Our process is about crushing ore and transporting it. At Diablo Regimiento we receive primary ore, which are large rocks, and we crush it, reduce it to 7 or 8 inches and then transport it.
At the CIO we manage everything. We have a system called SCADA, which controls everything and we visualize the process through the cameras installed in the mine. I have eight screens and I see almost 30 cameras, plus the SCADA system. Here I give the start and I can stop the crushers, the feeders, I manage everything from here.
How did you get to your current position?
I started as a contractor and then I applied to join the company, until I had to sign to enter the mine, where I grew and got to know the plant system.
I started as a mine operator, then I got to know the ground plants and little by little I started looking and making my way. I got to know the whole system, how it worked and then I started to practice here in Rancagua, where I have been for seven years now.
It was a radical change, in schedules and quality of life. Also, I never thought we would achieve so much technological progress in such a short time, it was a giant step that was taken. Getting to control the mine from Rancagua was impressive, it happened so quickly and it has worked perfectly.
What do you like most about your job?
I like the system, working with it. The 8 hours that you have to be here concentrating on the work and I like being in the mining production, even if I am far from the hill.
What do you feel the Division has brought to your life?
Since I've been in the division, Codelco has given me everything. I've grown as a person, I've started a family, I have two girls. I'm very satisfied. I've shown my oldest daughter videos of the work and she finds it impressive to work with so many screens. My wife is happy, because the company also delivers very good products to its workers.
What does it mean to you to work for a company like Codelco, which delivers its surpluses to all Chileans?
It is a pride to work here at Codelco and to help Chile grow more with what we do. Here we make the effort to ensure that production is always at 100% so that we meet our goals and that is reflected in everything that Codelco delivers to the country. I am proud to be working here.
