Gonzalo Barrera, Diablo Regimiento mine operator at Codelco El Teniente Division: “My twelve years at El Teniente have been ones of improvement, responsibility and safety”

A period with many changes, where technology has taken on a fundamental role in the advances in the area and which, essentially, can be summarized in one main concept: automation. These are just some of the aspects that Gonzalo Barrera, mine operator at Diablo Regimiento in Codelco División El Teniente, mentions when asked about the main changes he has seen in the operation.

“It has become quite automated and that means less exposure for the colleagues who are in the field. While it is true that we control the risks, something can always happen and automation helps us to eliminate many possible incidents. That is where the Division is aiming,” he says.

What is your job about?

Today I work in the production area at Diablo Regimiento, in the distribution of operators, personnel, equipment, verifying the movement of the level in terms of safety and production.

How did you come to El Teniente?

I was first in contracting companies. I was in Colón, in the plants, doing electrical maintenance, I was in the mill. But I wanted to join Codelco, I applied and I did well, I entered the Division and got to group 1 in Diablo Regimiento in production. I have always been here.

What does being a miner mean to you?

It is my job, my profession, and I carry it out with the greatest impetus and responsibility to do the job well, because I am aware that we have to take care of ourselves and if 20 colleagues come in on a shift, all 20 of us have to leave and be super responsible in everything we do at work.

And I feel proud that this generates a change as a person, in which one gets involved and becomes aware.

What do you feel the Division has brought to your life?

It has given me a lot, because I have developed an important professional career, I have learned a lot from work, also in the human aspect, and many tools to continue perfecting myself, improving day by day. These twelve years have been of improvement, responsibility and security.

What does it mean to you to work for a company like Codelco, which delivers its surplus production to all Chileans?

It is a very important job that we must carry out responsibly and judiciously, because we contribute to the country and that ultimately always requires our best performance to achieve all the goals in safety and production.
