With seven years working at Codelco División El Teniente, Edith Santander, a specialist engineer, has completed one year supporting security, monitoring and contributing to the prevention of risky actions from the Integrated Operations Center in Rancagua.

What is your job about?
I am a risk prevention expert in the Safety and Monitoring Operating System (SOMS) of the Integrated Operations Center (CIO Room) of Codelco El Teniente Division. I am dedicated to observing, evaluating and preventing risky actions that may cause an accident to people working in the Foundry, Plant, Mine and Pit.
What are the main challenges in your daily life?
We have around 800 cameras from which we observe the areas and evaluate whether the work is being done safely and that there is no deviation from the critical risks and standards that the Division has. If there is any deviation, we notify it immediately so that the field can be notified and they can stop the work and improve safety conditions.
What do you like most about your job?
We come here to do a job, but behind us there is a family, so the idea is that everyone gets to enjoy themselves and follow their purpose. That is what matters most to me, that the function we perform prevents accidents.
How long have you been in the Division?
I have been in this position for a year with the Avanza Group, but I have been working in the Division for seven years. I first came to Tambo, a machinery rental company, and with them I also did risk prevention, but in the field, in different areas.
What is the difference between on-site risk prevention?
What I do today is a different way of carrying out prevention on the ground, because we are everywhere through cameras. We do the work remotely and although there is no direct dialogue with people, the concern is always the same.
What do you feel The Teniente has brought to your life?
I did my internship at Interior Mina and my entire professional career has been here. The Division has given me a lot of learning in my life, from contact with people, learning to be in different areas, professional development, the enjoyment one has of one's career and the relationship one makes with people.
What safety message would you give to your colleagues in the Division?
We are a support, but safety always starts with oneself. And from there comes the importance of wanting to take care of ourselves and our colleagues. Because even though we have been working for many, it does not always mean that we are doing it well. So, the most important thing is that every step we take, we do it safely.
