El Teniente Division promotes urban and security improvements for residents of the Lo Miranda sector of Doñihue

Led by Codelco El Teniente in collaboration with the Municipality of Doñihue and the Residents' Association of the Santa Cristina Population, and executed by the local company Coya Activa, on September 2, 2024, work will begin on the first phase of the agreement to beautify the area adjacent to the tailings channel located in Lo Miranda.

The agreement, which will involve 149 meters of the canal and its surrounding areas, focusing on improving the local landscape and the safety of the area, will begin with the preparation of the land: cleaning and clearing of the area, removal of debris and waste, layout of axes and levels, herbicide treatment, filling and compaction. Later, fences of sleepers will be placed to create a perimeter fence, and improvements will be made in the vicinity of the canal.

In addition, murals will be placed and a representative mosaic will be created that reflects the local identity, incorporating cultural elements such as the hills and the typical chamanto of Doñihue. The agreement also includes the installation of lighting in the intervention area.

Mauricio Figueroa, president of the Santa Cristina Neighborhood Board, expressed the importance of this initiative to improve the quality of life of residents and that this first stage marks the beginning of this project. "With this agreement, I highlight the involvement of Codelco and the municipality for wanting to contribute to the community. It marks the beginning of something very positive for everyone," he said.

For her part, Pabla Ponce Valle, mayor of Doñihue, highlighted the importance of recovering public spaces and maintaining the cultural identity of the sector. "It is an initiative that we have been working on for a long time together with Codelco and the community. With this design idea, we seek to ensure that everyone can learn about and appreciate our emblems and traditions," she said.

Jacqueline Evrard, owner of the company Coya Activa, which is in charge of the work, stressed the importance of employing local labor and strengthening the sense of belonging. "We love working on community projects because we are part of this community, with local labor hired," she explained.

Carlos Vázquez, Supervisor of the Community Development Directorate of the El Teniente Division, highlighted the participatory approach of the project, pointing out that the community was involved in all stages, from diagnosis to execution. "It is a virtuous circle where the community directly benefits from the project and actively contributes to its development," he said.

The agreement will last approximately seven months and, depending on the results and additional needs, a second stage is planned to continue with the improvement of the canal and its surroundings.
