Rancagua, June 1, 2025.- It is with deep regret that we report the passing of our colleague Manuel González Pavez (RIP), a worker at the El Teniente Division, who died at the age of 60. Married and the father of two children, Manuel was an exemplary miner and a passionate athlete, whose career left an indelible mark on the history of our Corporation.
Manuel achieved national and international recognition for his participation in the rescue of the 33 miners trapped in the San José mine in 2010. He was the first to descend and the last to leave the mine during that historic operation that shocked the world.
For more than 30 years, he had a distinguished career at El Teniente, working in multiple specialties. Manuel combined work with studies that allowed him to take on new responsibilities as a shift manager and complete his career in engineering.
Before entering the mining industry, he was a professional soccer player. Between 1982 and 1985, he played for Club O'Higgins de Rancagua and then moved to Arica, where he lived for five years. At 26, he joined El Teniente.
After his participation in the rescue of the San José mine and in recognition of this feat, his colleagues at El Teniente honored him by naming a room in the Diablo Regimiento mine after him.
Codelco appreciates Manuel's contribution and legacy to the Corporation and shares the condolences and grief of his family, friends, and colleagues.
