Alejandro Guajardo, operator at the Caletones Foundry: “This work is exciting and it is exciting to see the final product of the copper process”

Even in winter, high temperatures are part of Alejandro Guajardo's daily routine. "We are exposed to the heat every day, with a suit that makes us sweat a lot, but that is what protects us," says the operator of the Caletones Foundry, of the El Teniente Division.

What is your job about?

I work on the Twin Wheel — a two-wheel molding system with 16 molds each that allows anodes to be generated in an automated process — and we see how the finished copper comes out and is then loaded onto trucks.

We have to clean the copper, which comes molten, in a liquid state, at more than 1,000 degrees Celsius, with a tool we call a trowel and our suit. It's like skimming the cream from the milk.

We work hard here and we have to be careful to get home safely every day, but it is exciting to be here because we see the final product of the copper process. It is beautiful.

What do you like most about your job?

The camaraderie we have. The good relationship that exists between everyone.

And how do you see that reflected in your daily life?
Because you share with your colleagues, you come here and you feel good. In other places the atmosphere can sometimes be a bit tense, but not here, there is a good relationship with the whole work group, so I am happy here.

How did you come to El Teniente?

I have been in the Division for about 20 years. First I was a contractor, I worked inside the mine and in the Foundry, when we made the ingots. Then I applied several times, I spent a lot of time in that, I went to Santiago about three times to take the tests until one day it happened, they called me, I passed the evaluations and signed the contract. Coming here was different, because I was able to project myself.
