Codelco actively participates in Rancagua Environmental Fair

The mining company presented the main corporate initiatives to generate environmental value in the territory at the Plaza de Los Héroes. The activity brought together more than 50 companies, public services and entrepreneurs.

In its commitment to sustainability, Codelco El Teniente Division participated in the World Environment Day Fair held at the Plaza de Los Héroes in Rancagua. During the activity, the mining company shared the initiatives it has implemented to generate environmental value in the O'Higgins Region.

The event, organized by the Municipality of Rancagua, was attended by 50 companies, public services and entrepreneurs.

The regional minister for energy, Claudio Martínez, explained that “we are very happy to see how these types of initiatives are developing, because they bring together issues such as sustainability, renewable energies, the energy transition and the climate crisis.”

During the day, El Teniente presented its main commitments regarding carbon footprint, water footprint, circular economy, reduction of particulate matter, tailings deposit standards and development of territories with social value. These include the incorporation of 110 electric buses and the recycling of 47% of the waste generated.

Generating environmental value

Darío García, regional minister for Economy, Development and Tourism, said that “we are looking for initiatives that have a triple impact, because they are economic activities that must be economically sustainable over time. The environmental problem is a cooperative one, so I appreciate Codelco's participation.”

The acting mayor of Rancagua, Emerson Avendaño, said that “we saw several students who came to learn about the initiatives of the different services. This allows us to create and train new generations.”

For her part, Sofía Ortiz, a resident of Rancagua, added that “it is extremely important that these spaces are opened, because it provides information to citizens, but also invites them to reflect and be part of the change. In general, it helps that companies approach these types of instances and are close to the community.”

Marcos Cienfuegos, a teacher at Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna's school, added that "knowing what happens in companies and how they care for the environment is important. I think that more than one initiative remains with the children."

Codelco División El Teniente's participation in the Environment Day Fair seeks to reinforce its commitment to sustainability and the development of initiatives that benefit both the environment and local communities.
