Since the beginning of the XXI century, Codelco begun defining its strategy based on a future vision implying leadership consolidation as a world copper producer, using measures allowing the development of business potential and competitiveness, maximizing its economic value and the contribution to the State.
A large number of these goals have been expressed in the framework of the Strategic Alliance between the company and its workers, agreed in 1994 between the Codelco’s Administration and the Copper Worker’s Federation, FTC.
The Company Common Project, PCE is implemented under the framework of this Strategic Alliance, between the year 2000 and 2006, and in 2007 the Strategic Alliance Phase III, involving all the workers of the Corporation, due to the fact that it privileges a management style based on cooperation, convincement, participation and teamwork.
The Strategic Alliance Phase III is the participative management tool that the Codelco Administration and the Copper Worker’s Federation – FTC have agreed to increase the competitiveness of the Corporation, as well as labor development and the quality of life of the workers.
The relationship established between both parties is based on trust, collaboration and transparency in the exchange of information as well in the adoption of agreements.
The third phase of the Strategic Alliance defined a vision for the company for the year 2010, ratifying the state character of the Corporation: “Codelco, 100% state owned company, shall lead the creation of value and competitiveness of the industry, trying to achieve, in the long run, the goal of 50% copper production and commercialization in Chile, enhancing its capacity of being the main copper producer in the world”.
Additionally, this vision reassures the commitment of the workers with the Strategic Alliance, as a “basic element for the achievement of high quality standards, allowing the creation of value for the State, workers, clients and communities”. Reiterating “Codelco shall lead the strategic option so that the mining industry in Chile becomes the key driver of a sustainable national development model, fostering that all exports of the mining industry of the country are based on refined copper”.
In order to make commitments a reality, the Strategic Alliance Phase III identified seven strategic drivers for Codelco.
- Develop all its business potential with a strong drive towards growth and competitive leadership
- Ensure the development of all human and social capital, placing people at the center of the company strategy
- Commitment with sustainable development, social and corporate responsibility and the transparency of the administration
- Lead innovation, technological effort and knowledge management, as a basic requirement for competitiveness.
- Ensure operational excellency, continuous improvement in processes and a high performance organization
- Lead the creation of new markets, promotion of copper consumption, fostering the development of the regional cluster
- Promote the improvement of the corporate Government; modernizing Codelco’s institutionality under the framework of being 100% a state owned company.
