Session 3: Technological breakthroughs in CODELCO.
Continuous underground mining

Faced with challenges to the competitiveness of its large mining operations, CODELCO has made a significant effort in conceptualizing and developing a highly productive new continuous underground mining technology. Scientific developments in mathematics and the sciences of the earth, applied to the method of Block Caving, have allowed innovating in concepts of preconditioning, extraction, fragmenting and transportation. This session will address the current situation and future projections of these technologies.

Bio-hydrometallurgy

The challenges and difficulties associated to the incorporation of biology to mining operations, from the fundaments of molecular biology, bioinformatics, bioprocesses and their application to low grade mineral ores and copper concentrates with high levels of impurity. The session will also suggest the future agenda for the materialization of this technological breakthrough.

Information and Communication Technologies and automation, and their impact on mining.

The session addresses the potential impact of the ICTs and automation in the mining industry, as well as the levels of creativity required to overcome difficulties associated to their incorporation, ultimately allowing harmonizing between processes, people and technology. This, furthermore, takes us to the adoption of new business concepts aimed at the accelerated introduction of new systems of communication, automation, remote operation, robotics and intelligence, supporting decision making processes.
