Codelco is part of international organizations aimed at coordinating the industry efforts in support of sustainable development, particularly in initiatives related to a modern mining industry that seeks to minimize the impact of mining and metals on health and the ecosystem.

 WBCSD - World Business Council for Sustainable Development
The WBCSD is a coalition of 170 companies in over 35 countries and of several sectors of the business activity, united by the commitment on economic growth, environmental balance and social progress. Codelco is part of this organization since September 2000.

 
 

During 2003, Codelco participated in the general meetings of the organization and, especially, in the Young Managers Team and the project on Accountability & Reporting.

The Young Managers Team is a learning program for young professionals of the member companies, to generate skills in the sustainable development area. In accordance with the priorities established by the United Nations, which declared 2003 as the International Year on Fresh Water, the work of the Team was oriented towards this issue.

On the other hand, the project on Accountability & Reporting tries to generate a practical tool that integrates the concepts of sustainable development in the responsibility structure of the companies.

The project focuses its work on presenting a structure and methodology for the study of cases and best practices and establish a work plan to coordinate itself with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI); identify the existing codes, and propose the bases that will allow to align the internal practices on responsibilities of the companies with the external standards, codes and structures, as for example the Global Pact of the United Nations."

 Chilean Chapter of the WBCSD
On August 17, 2004 was created the Chilean Chapter of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The group is composed of: Codelco, Angloamerican Chile, Gerdau Aza, Grupo Polpaico, Masisa, Metrogas, Minera Escondida, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Shell. This conglomerate is the Chilean representative at the business organization and Acción RSE will be the organization that sponsors the Chapter.

The members of the Chilean Chapter of the Council have access to a global network of 50 regional and national business associations and to 1,000 business leaders around the world; to documents and information generated by the Council and to instances of mutual cooperation.

Likewise, it allows them to be connected to the latest progresses and best practices in economic, environmental and social administration, and it grants them access to the sustainable development platform on the Internet. The Chilean Chapter is open to other companies that operate in Chile that want to incorporate themselves to these initiatives of global leadership."

 ICA - International Copper Association

 
 

The ICA is the leading organization in the promotion of the use of copper at global level. It divulges the unique characteristics of copper as a contribution to life and its contribution to a better life quality in the world.

The 35 member companies represent almost 80 percent of the global production of refined copper and belong to the largest copper producing companies and manufactures of copper alloys, wires and cables. Codelco is part of the ICA since 1986.

During 2003, the Executive President of Codelco served his first year as Chairman of the Board of this organization, leading the implementation of the strategic plan that aims to position copper as the material of the future, essential for the health, the technology and the life quality of people.
This plan considers the increase of the copper demand to a minimum of 800,000 additional tons to the natural growth of the demand for 2006.

Through this strategy, the organization expects to include in the near future new technologies related to the uses of copper and energy standards associated to the protection of environment and the consumption of copper, among other issues.

Codelco also leads significant instances that are related to the ICA, as the chair of the Latin America and The Caribbean Environmental Committee (LACEC) and the vice chair of the Environmental Program Advisory Committee.

 IMOA - International Molybdenum Association
This entity was established under the Belgium law in 1989 as an association with scientific purposes, and has become a focus point of the promotional, statistical and technical activities of the molybdenum industry at global level. Its members include, among other, producers, consumers and traders.

Codelco is a member of the IMOA since it was founded, due to the strategic importance of molybdenum as the second most important product of the Corporation. Through this Association, and together with the most relevant actors of this industry, Codelco has established several activities destined to defend, based on the solid scientific knowledge, the molybdenum of the growing regulatory demands and promote it as material of the future at global level."

 GRI - Global Reporting Initiative
The GRI is a non-profit independent institution composed of several social actors that strive to increase the quality and quantity of the sustainability reports published by the companies. Its purpose is to develop and divulge guides for the elaboration of sustainability reports that are applicable at global level.

The initiative, existing as an independent institution since 2002, is an official collaboration center of the United Nations Program for the Environment (UNPE) and works in cooperation with the Global Pact of the Secretary General of the United Nations. Over 200 companies of 26 countries use its guidelines to elaborate its sustainability reports.

Codelco is member of the GRI since 2003 as an organizational stakeholder and publishes its reports since 2002 according to the Guidelines for the Elaboration of Sustainability Reports of the GRI.
In 1999 Codelco published its first Environmental Report. The reports Environment and Community published in 2001, 2002 and 2003 were elaborated based on the Guidelines for Sustainability Reports of the GRI. The Report is distributed together with the Annual Report of the Corporation.

 WEF - World Economic Forum
Independent organization with members representing 1,000 of the most important companies in the world. The Forum is financed with the periodical payments of its members and it works in association with academics, government representatives, international organizations, communication media, non governmental organizations and labor and religious leaders. Codelco is member of the WEF since 1997.

The main task of this entity is to provide assistance to world leaders in issues of global interest, promote the business activity within the global public interests and to be, at any time, an independent and non-political organization.
During 2003, Codelco participates in the study on Values and Value, whose object was to investigate how companies communicate the strategic importance of the social and environmental aspects of its performance to the investors and owners.

 Chilean Mining Council A.G.
Professional association that gathers 17 companies of the large mining sector in Chile, which produce approximately 95 percent of the copper, gold and silver in the country. Codelco is member of the Council since it was created in 1998.

Codelco participates actively in the environmental committee of the Mining Council, collaborating in the coordination and generation of actions of the large mining companies in the country on issues related to sustainable development."
