The offer of products of Codelco includes mainly copper at
different stages and degrees of refinement, to a lesser extent
the subproducts such as molybdenum, sulphuric acid and precious
metals that come with copper in the ore.
Copper is processed in several stages from extraction and
crushing of the ore to electrolythic refining, which allows
to obtain 99.99% pure copper cathodes.
Codelco´s main product is a raw material of the highest
quality for the fabrication of copper products aimed at end
consumers throughout the world.
The first commercial copper product, in an increasing chain
of added value, is the copper
concentrate, which main components are copper, iron and
sulfide.
During the same processing stage molybdenum, as bisulfide,
is obtained, which is then processed to attain the commercial
form of
molybdenum trioxide.
Copper concentrate is smelted and converted to metallic copper,
which allows it to attain forms that can be submitted to further
refination, more than 99% pure, such as anodic
copper and blister copper.
At this stage of smelting and conversion, metallurgical gases
are generated which, after being treated, give rise to another
subproduct, the sulphuric
acid.
Metallic copper in turn is submitted to smelting and refining
in special furnaces to produce lingotes
refinados a fuego RAF, 99.9% pure copper.
The main application of anodic copper is to use it as raw
material in the process of electrolythic refining, to produce
the electrorefined
cathode, 99.99% pure, the product with the highest added
value before manufacture.
One of the products for which production the cathodes are
used is the wire
rod, which in turn is used to fabricate wires and cables.
In the process of electrolythic refining there appears another
subproduct commercialized by Codelco, the anodic
slimes, rich in silver and gold.
